About the Ceremony

The Calling of an Engineer ceremony is a Canadian tradition now more than 100 years old. The ceremony is an opportunity for engineering graduates as they join the Canadian engineering community, to obligate themselves to high standards of honour, integrity, and professionalism. Participants receive an iron ring as a life-long reminder of their obligation, and as symbol to others that they are an obligated engineer.

Over the years, the ceremony has come to be misunderstood as a university event intended to mark the completion of an engineering student’s undergraduate education. This is not the case.  While the administration of the ceremony draws heavily on support from universities, the ceremony is administered locally by Camp 1 of the Calling of an Engineer, a body that is independent of the universities. Camp 1 is one of 28 camps across Canada.

Beginning in 2025, the centennial year of the Calling of an Engineer, Camp 1 made the decision to move ceremonies off campus. The primary motivation was to reinforce the points made above:

  • The Calling of an Engineer is not a university event
  • The ceremony is not intended to mark the completion of your education, but rather the beginning of your experience as a Canadian engineer

The ceremony itself draws on the image of young engineers approaching a camp of engineers at work in the field, and asking if they may join the camp. The experienced engineers welcome them to the camp, while imparting to them some wisdom about the importance and true meaning of honour, integrity, and professionalism, before they go to their work. Camp 1’s choice of an off-campus location echoes this imagery. We invite you to go out from your place of education and join us in the field as you enter the profession of engineering in Canada.

We look forward to welcoming you to the camp.

All Spring Ceremonies in 2026 will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in the John W.H. Bassett Theatre.
